Relying on the power of essential oils can help soothe an upset tummy quickly and naturally. When you are trying to live your best life during the carefree months of summer, it helps to not feel icky. Fewer things rain on a parade quite like being plagued by constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, or nausea (or worse yet, any combination of them).
Summertime is chock full of fun times hanging with family and friends. Those amazing events usually include food. Lots of food. If you are anything like me, you get a little tempted to overindulge sometimes. This is a surefire recipe for upset tummy and other unpleasant digestive issues. No worries! Essential oils come to the rescue! Some essential oils are known for their ability to calm an angry gut, so you can get back into summer fun mode again. I will break down some of the best oily solutions in this post. First, we must talk about why your tummy gets disgruntled. Hint: it is about more than overindulging.
Obviously, overeating is never a good idea, but there are other factors in play during the summer months that can lead to digestive distress and an upset tummy. Slow digestion is one of them. If you live in a warmer climate, your digestion can become sluggish. The higher the temperature goes on the thermometer, the slower your metabolism. Pair this phenomenon with overeating and lack of activity, and our tummies can get ticked off in a hurry.
When your digestion is slow, your body responds in several ways, sending out some warning signals.
Dealing with an upset tummy can make you a party pooper. Literally. So, keep slow digestion in mind when you are at events where food and drink are plentiful. Indulge in moderation to keep things flowing as nature intended.
If it is too late and you already have crossed the comfort threshold for food and drink intake, there are things you can do to help ease your discomfort. Relying on some tried and true essential oils is a natural solution for an upset tummy.
One of the most common issues from a slow metabolism is constipation. Your digestive system gets backed up because you shovel fuel in faster than your body can process it. Fennel essential oil is an all-time favorite for unclogging the pipes. It is a powerful digestive stimulant. Mix with a small amount of your favorite carrier oil and massage it directly into your abdomen. Gentle, circular motions are best for stimulating digestion.
Peppermint Vitality essential oil is another powerhouse for promoting proper bowel function and relieving the upset tummy that results from it. You can ingest this oil by adding 1 to 2 drops to any cool drink. You can even bake it into your favorite recipes that call for a fresh, minty flavor. You can do the same thing with Lemon essential oil. A few drops in a glass of cool water can get the pipes working again. Add it to all your favorite recipes that call for lemon zest.
Sometimes we catch our body’s signals before we get into the unpleasant situation of full-on constipation. Raging heartburn is one way your body warns you that you might be getting a bit too enthusiastic with shoving food and drink into your mouth. Ginger is a common natural solution for an angry or upset tummy. It supports healthy digestion and offers soothing relief for an upset tummy. Ginger Vitality essential oil can be applied topically when mixed with a carrier oil or ingested for quick relief.
A note of caution: keep in mind that ginger is a photosensitive essential oil, so you should never use it and then spend time in the sun to help avoid skin irritation. If you plan to be outside, consider ingesting ginger in a cool drink or one of your favorite recipes instead.
One of the best ways to approach digestive discomfort is to do your best to prevent it. Yes, this means you probably need more willpower to keep from overindulging at the next family barbecue. It also means making gut-friend essential oils a regular part of your health and wellness routine. One of my favorite ways to keep things humming along smoothly is by combining the power of Cardamon and Clove essential oils. Both have natural anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties. Clove gets an added boost as an antimicrobial. When paired with your favorite summertime drinks or recipes, they can help promote a happier, healthier gut. Bonus tip: add them into a smoothie for a cool summer treat.
